About Me

Hello!  Welcome to my blog about being a business teacher.  I hope that the information I provide you with will guide you on your journey to being a successful business teacher!  My goal is to post once a day on different topics that you will be covering in class.  I make no promises with a full time job and family that keep me busy at home.  I will let Nancy know when there is a new post, but the best way to stay connected is to follow my blog and subscribe to an RSS feed where you can stay updated daily!

Okay, on to my introduction!  My name is Janell, I graduated from CMU in December 2004 with a degree in secondary education.  My major in the education program was health and my minor was business.  That is the reason why I am in your class, to turn that minor into a major, therefore leading to my vocational certification.  The more certifications/subject areas you have or can teach the better--but that will be in another post:)  After graduation, I subbed for 2 years in the district that I did my student teaching in and then fell into a job at Bedford High School, in Temperance, Michigan.  We are right on the Ohio border, Class A school, and a great place to work.

I have been married for almost 7 years, have 2 beautiful daughters, and one on the way.  As I said before...I am busy busy:)

I currently teach all 9th grade (freshman are challenging but rewarding).  I teach Health part time and a class called Online Experience which deals with technology and the use of Web 2.0.  I have not taught any CTE courses due to my lack of the vocational certification, but have been around them and worked closely with those teachers.

I hope this blog helps you gain some perspective on what the teaching world is like and what to expect after graduation.  Please feel free to leave a comment on this post introducing yourself, so that I can get to know a little about you all as well.

  1. Hey Janelle,

My name is Keith. I'm currently trying to get out of CMU in five years. I'm double majoring in Business Ed, and English (you know to be more marketable and all). As a first year senior, I already have senioritis. I believe that if they handed me that little certification right now, I would spread my wings and fly far away. As you probably know our business ed department is being phased out. Thus I have had Nancy for the past four semesters or so. It's GREAT! As for after I graduate, I know I just need to find a job somewhere, but I'm leaning towards teaching in a high risk area. I'm not sure how many business programs are out there, but if I could fit those two together, I would be a happy camper. I look forward to hearing about a day in the life of a business teacher. I'm also curious if we can just subscribe to this? I'm busy too you know. :)

  2. (I'm posting Jordan's intro for her)

Hi Janell! My name is Jordan and I am a 5th year senior at CMU, majoring in Bus. Ed. with a math minor. I spent my first 3 years of school at GVSU with a marketing major, then a math education major. At CMU I was finally able to combine the two into the degree I really wanted!

I will be completing my student teaching in the upcoming fall semester at Mt. Pleasant High School. I have been assigned to 9th grade intro. to computer courses so I'm very excited about that! I am nervous to get started but ready for my undergraduate classes to finally be over.

I'm originally from Marysville on the east side of the state. I don't think I will be heading back to look for a job but I'm keeping my options open. If I stay in state I love the Grand Rapids area, but I'm definitely not opposed to looking out of state in someplace warm!

Thanks for sharing with us and I look forward to reading about what your life is like as a teacher! :)

  3. Hi Jenell,

I apologize for the late blog post, I was having some trouble with the blog. My name is Rob Yusko and I am a senior at CMU. I am majoring in Bus. Education with a minor in history. I have enjoyed my time at CMU, and feel my classes have prepared me to become a business teacher.

I plan on student teaching during the fall, and I should be graduated by the winter if everything goes as plan. I am ready to get some real world experience, and get into the classroom!!

Nice to meet you, look forward to reading your blog!!

    Rob

  4. Hi there! My name is Jerrod and I am a senior here at Central! I am a double major in Business Education and Special Education. I am really looking forward to student teaching in the fall!

My home town is East China, Michigan. I would love to work in my hometown district but know that it is an unlikely ambition but you never know!

Before student teaching, I have to finish my Special ed midtier this summer and my two Special ed methods classes, so I have a super busy one this year! I am eagerly waiting for my placements still and can't wait to get started!

Thank you so much for participating in our class! I am so excited to meet you via Skype!

  7. Hello! My name is Katie, and I am a 5th year senior at Central. I am a BTE major with Office and Marketing concentrations. I have four minors; general business, leadership, hospitality and legal studies. Hopefully this will make me even more marketable in the job market.

I live a very busy life here at CMU, working both at the SAC and at The Village at Bluegrass as a community assistant. Both of these jobs are giving me great experience for my degrees.

I am from Davison, which is just outside of Flint. I hope to be able to teach at my alma mater, as they tend to hire alumni students. I will be taking a summer class, 15 credits in the fall, and then student teaching next spring. I love being a college student (sarcasm). I'm doing my midtier this summer, unsure of my placement though. I need to fulfill my diversity requirement, so hopefully I will get placed in the Saginaw district.

Like the others have said, I am looking forward to meeting you tomorrow via Skype! Hopefully we do not have too many technological problems!
